SPRING FAIR – 20th MAY

Welcome Spring into your garden by buying some bedding plants and plants for your hanging baskets at the Exchange on 20th May. You can also make yourself look as beautiful as your garden by treating yourself, or a friend, to a beautiful piece of hand made jewellery by Victoria Sewell.  She will be selling her very individual and stylish glass and crystal necklaces, bracelets and earrings on this day so don’t miss our Spring Fair!

SUMMER REGATTA – 3rd JUNE

After Spring comes Summer, and we at the Exchange love any excuse for  a party! So join us for a glass of Pimms and sandwiches on the first Wednesday in June to welcome in the start of Summer…a few days early! Cheers!

STRAWBERRY TEA – 15th JULY

Home made scones? Check. Lashings of whipped cream? Check. Sumptiously juicy strawberries? Check. Everything you need for a belting Strawberry Tea is right here at the Exchange. Come along and be spoilt rotten. Go on, you know you’re worth it!

CURRENT EVENTS

Enterprising Britain –Exchange Entry!

The Exchange Committee has entered this competition aimed at finding the “most enterprising place in Britain”! We are waiting to see if we have been shortlisted to the final four entries and if we are then we have to do a short presentation to the judges and should know whether we have won the North West competition later this month. Tim Farron has written a glowing endorsement of the Exchange in support of our entry and we are quietly confident that we have a very good chance of doing well. We’ll let you know how we get on…watch out for more news at forthcoming Exchanges!

NHS sponsor 6 more Exchanges

As a result of Exchange committee members attending a recent conference on Healthy Communities run by the NHS, it was decided that 6 more Exchanges should be set up in South Lakeland and Eden. The local NHS Trust believes that the Crosthwaite Exchange “is a fantastic initiative and a shining example of Good Practice” and as such should act as a model to be replicated around the county. As we reported in our last newsletter, an Exchange has already been set up in Bolton by Appleby but we have also had enquiries from as far away as Kent. All of this merely confirms what we in Crosthwaite and the surrounding area already knew: The Exchange is a brilliant idea!

Exchange’s Youngest Visitors!

On 4th February, Mary Harkness’ daughter, Tess, brought her new born Twins to the Exchange, proving once again that the Exchange has something for everyone! Belated congratulations, Tess, and do bring your beautiful babies to see us all again very soon.

Banish The Blues Party – 25th February

The weather may be warmer now, but back in February we were still in the grip of dreary cold, wet climes. So the Exchange held a “Banish the Blues” party, inviting visitors to the Exchange to dress up in their Summer clothes. Exchange staff wore colourful, handmade paper garlands (called leis) and served refreshing Mocktails complete with fruit and umbrellas!

Fair Trade Week – 4th March

We celebrated Fair Trade Week at the Exchange by having a special display of Traidcraft products. Penny put lots of effort in to producing flyers telling the story of various Traidcraft producers to bring the work of this organisation to life. Buying a little each week can make a big difference to the lives of people living in some of the poorest parts of the world, so make sure you take a look at the Traidcraft stall next time you are at The Exchange.

Lunches at The Exchange

Have you sampled our latest lunch offering yet? The Exchange Team has introduced Jacket Potatoes as a lunch time alternative to sandwiches. The first outing for our newest idea is 6th May when visitors are offered a choice of 2 fillings: Tuna & sweetcorn or cheese & tomato. Please do pass on your suggestions for future fillings to our staff and we will do our best to accommodate you. Perhaps we could have a competition to devise an “Exchange” filling all of our own. Macaroni and pickle, anyone? Just kidding!

The Future of The Crosthwaite Exchange

Completing the entry form for the Enterprising Britain competition led the Exchange Committee to look to the future survival of the Crosthwaite Exchange. We know it is a simple idea, one that other communities are now taking on, but it does depend on volunteers to bake cakes and serve on the day. Without our band of around 30 volunteers, the Exchange would have to close its doors, so how do we encourage new people to get involved and take the Exchange forward over the next 3-5 years? If you are sitting reading this and thinking to yourself “I could bake, once in a while”, or “I could give up a Wednesday afternoon now and again”, then make yourself known to a member of the Exchange staff and get yourself on our baking or serving rota. Its that simple! If you don’t have the time to serve or the talent to bake, perhaps you know someone who does. Please spread the word amongst your friends and family and help us secure the future of the Crosthwaite Exchange. Thank you.
