CURRENT EVENTS
STRAWBERRY TEA
Many of you came to celebrate our “wet enough for ducks” strawberry tea party on June
25th. Helen is modelling a dish of strawberries in this picture!
CHILDREN’S CRAFTS
Despite feeling a little “under the weather” Pam has been entertaining our village and visiting children with her fun craft sessions, during the school summer holidays, using a truly amazing variety of materials and media.
LAKE DISTRICT PARK AUTHORITY
One Wednesday, in August, two members of the LDPA came to see the Exchange for themselves and to talk to us about possible links with their organisation. Our local warden, David, thought it would be a good idea to bring a display to the Exchange periodically and be prepared to answer questions on policy and planning. He is also considering booking in a session with Liz and Dave, to have his aching feet seen to!!
COUNTRY MARKET
As
well as the delicious array of cakes, biscuits, jams and pickles made by our talented Crosthwaite
cooks, we have had a magnificent collection of vegetables and salads for sale over the summer.
May we thank all our growers for giving us the opportunity to buy the healthy, local food, that
they have toiled over in their gardens!
SUMMER LUNCHES
Our filled roll and salad lunches, with a cake to follow, have been enjoyed by a good number of you, over the summer months, so we hope you will let us know if you would like the tradition to continue. We plan to change back to the “winter” homemade soup and a roll, in October. These lunches are, of course, held on the first Wednesday of the month at the earlier starting time, 1 o’clock.
NEW
ARRIVAL
We were delighted to meet George, Steve and Victoria’s new baby son, at the Exchange on 6th August. He came with his brother, Alex and sister Emily.
OUT AND ABOUT
Following our visit to the Voluntary Action Cumbria Conference in Melmerby, last November, we were asked to talk about the Exchange at another conference called “Healthy Sustainable Communities”, which was organised by the Health and Wellbeing Task Group, an off-shoot of the NHS. Penny and Caroline went there in June this year. Four groups from South Lakes talked about their work and, after group discussions, all the delegates were asked to stick coloured dots on the best ideas to come out of the day. It was a bit like a beauty contest! The Exchange won hands down!!
Voluntary Action Cumbria have asked us to talk at their birthday party in November. More of that event in our next newsletter.
BLUEPRINT for an EXCHANGE
With the help of Gail Knopfel, working for VAC, we have produced a blueprint for other villages wanting to set up a similar organisation to the Exchange. You will find it on the VAC website, www.ruralcumbria.org.uk (under the tab called Sustaining Rural Services) Three people, from the village of Bolton in Appleby, came to visit us recently, to see for themselves how the blueprint would work, prior to setting up their own version of an Exchange.
UNITED UTILITIES/BALFOUR BEATTY
A contingent from the team who are laying water pipes in the Village, from September this year, came to the Exchange to explain time scales and road closures. It was good to be able to quiz them on particular concerns.
