THE YEAR 2009

Although we had a somewhat wet summer and a cataclysmically wet November it is interesting that the total rainfall for the year was only a little above the average. The average of the annual amounts that I have recorded from 1993 to 2009 is 1448 mm and this year was 1562, well below the greatest of 1771 mm in 2008.  This year the temperatures have not been in accord with the Met Office forecast of a “barbecue summer”, with only one week at the end of June when the weather could really have deserved such a description. Likewise the promise of a “mild winter” started to be refuted with snow and low temperatures before Christmas.
