Notice is hereby given that a Public Vestry Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth, will be held in the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite on Thursday the 22nd of November 1894 at 2 o'clock in the Afternoon for the purpose of Letting, or renewing the several Leases of Whitbarrow Township Allotment situated upon Whitbarrow.
viz: The Game, Quarries, Cottage House and Nuts, and also the Eatage and Depasturage for one year.
And to consider the desirability of cutting some Larch trees, growing upon the Township Allotment, situated upon Whitbarrow.
And also to confirm the selling of a Piece of Land at Whitescar and Township Allotment containing 10 perches, to William Farrer Ecroyd esq. of Whitbarrow Lodge in Lyth,

As requested I have considered whether the Landowners have still a right to let and manage these allotments with the rights touching the government Act 1894, and having regard to the terms of the Award. I am of the opinion that the Act does not affect the right of the Landowners to let and manage the Allotments.

The above letter was written in answer to a request of Mr Burrow and Mr Argles to Mr Milne to consider the question.
It was resolved that the several Leases be continued , that F.A. Argles Esq, W.F. Ecroyd Esq, James Strickland and George Moss should hold their Tenancies on the same terms as heretofore for the next year ensuing, commencing in the spring of 1896, except George Moss, the Taker of the Quarries, who commences this day the 22nd November 1895. Resolved that some more Larch trees be thinned out in the Whitbarrow Plantation.

At a Public Vestry Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth held at the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite on Thursday the 22nd Day of November 1900 at 2 o'clock in the Afternoon, for the following purposes pursuant to a Notice given which the following is a copy.
I am required to give you Notice that a Public Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township and Lyth will be held at the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite aforesaid on Thursday the 22nd Day of November 1900 at Two O'Clock in the afternoon for the following purposes.

1st To determine upon the propriety of Leasing for one year the Eat age and Depasturage of and also the surplus Rock, and Limestone, and Game, Cottage House, Garden and Nuts and also the Shilloe Quarry for one year within certain Allotments. As set out and awarded to the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within Crosthwaite and Lyth aforesaid over and above what may be deemed sufficient for the use and consumption of the said Proprietors.
2nd If the Meeting should determine so to dispose of the Eatage and Depasturage and also the surplus Rock and Limestone, Game, Cottage House, Garden and Nuts, and also the Eatage and Shilloe Quarry of Whitescar End in the same Allotments, then to receive proposals from and enter into a contract with any person or persons willing to become such Lessee or Lessees

4th Resolved that the Eatage and Depasturage of the Township Allotment and Plantation of Crosthwaite and Lyth situated upon Whitbarrow and numbered upon the award Plan 666a containing about 538 acres more or less be Let for a term of 7 years and renewed yearly until the expiration of that 7 years subject to and in accordance with the following conditions and reservations to F A Argles for the sum of £24.
5th The Proprietors reserve the Cottage House, Garden, Fruit Tress, Nutwood and Nuts growing on the aforesaid Allotment No 666a and let the same to Mrs Strickland for the sum of £7.
6th The Proprietors reserve all the Limestone, Rock with liberty to get and Quarry stone and Material for Building and other purposes either for themselves or tenants in the several Quarries and to cart and carry away the same without being subject to any damages for so doing from off the Allotment No 666a and let the right to Quarry for sale to George Moss for the sum of £4. For each Powder Runner or Bed Plate delivered to any person requiring the same and which shall not be used within the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth, the Tenant or person getting them shall pay the Proprietors the sum of Three Guineas in addition to the yearly rent; and for every Powder Runner or Bed Plate required as above by any person who may wish to get, dress and Quarry the same, the Tenant shall not charge more than one pound in addition to the Three Guineas increased rent.
At the end of the term, the tenant shall be allowed one month to remove out of the Allotment and also out of the several Quarries situated thereon all Quoins, Lintels, Flags and Gateposts or other stone intended to be sold or delivered to any person requiring the same and which shall not be used within the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth and for every Ton of stone removed for sale out of the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth after the expiration of the time given the tenant shall pay to the Proprietors the sum of one pound in addition to the yearly rent.
7th The Proprietors reserve all the Larch Trees and Coppice Wood growing upon the same Allotment with liberty to cut down, manufacture and cart away the said wood at any time from the Allotment No 666a.
8th The Proprietors reserve all Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl which may be produced thereon with full liberty to hunt and shoot over the aforesaid Allotment No 666a and let the same to T A Argles for the sum of £16
9th The Tenant to pay all the Taxes and all parochial Rates and assessments which may be imposed upon the same. The Tenant of the Cottage House, Nutwood to enter on the Garden from the 25th April and the House on the 12th Day of May 1901.
The Tenant of the two Quarries to enter on from the Day of Letting the 22nd day of November 1900.
The Taker of the Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl from the 25th Day of April 1901 and at the end or other sooner determination of the term to give up possession to their incoming tenants on the same dates.
The Rent to be due on the first day of June in each year if demanded and paid to Mr John Burrow, the Agent for the time being of the Proprietors.
Resolved that the Eatage and Depasturage with all Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl that may be produced thereon of the Township Allotment of Crosthwaite with Lyth situated at Whitescar End and the Shilloe Quarry and numbered upon the Award Plan No 649a containing about 29 acres more or less to be Let for one year and renewed yearly until the expiration of seven years subject to and in accordance with the following conditions and reservations and let to W.F. Ecroyd for the sum of £4.10.0 and £1.1.0 for Shilloe. The Proprietors reserve all Trees and Coppice wood growing thereon, with all the surplus Rock, sand and shilloe, with liberty to get stones for the Roads, Material sand and shilloe and cart and carry away the same at any time without being subject to any damages for so doing from the Allotment No 649a.
The Tenant to enter on for Eatage and Depasturage, with all Game, Rabbits and Shilloe, from the 25th day of April 1901 and at the end or sooner determination of the term to give up possession to the Proprietors or their incoming tenants on the same date.

Present at the Meeting, Rev Heelis and Mr John Burrow. The several leases above referred to were read and renewed. Resolved that some larch trees be thinned on Whitbarrow Township Allotment. Mr Burrow produced accounts for the last year showing expenses of management £18.16.8 which he has repaid himself. He also stated that with the exception of this amount and £17.19.7 received on March 3rd 1902, he had not received any money of the expenses in previous years. He was asked to draw up a statement of money due to him and produce it at a General Meeting of Ratepayers.

At a Public Vestry Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth held at the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite on Friday the 13th day of March 1903 at 5.30 o'clock in the afternoon pursuant to Notice given of which a copy is amended.
Present Mr T A Argles, the Rev Canon Arles, and T Heelis and Messrs Thomas Pearson, John Ellis, John Leah, Joseph Wilson, James Moss, Robert Mathews, E W Wakefield, Arthur Hoggarth, Edwin Hoggarth, James Prickett, Joseph Simpson, Henry Moon, Isaac Pearson, W Argles in the Chair.
The chairman explained that the application (1) for license to search for limestone in Whitbarrow and (2) an option to take a lease of the right to take such limestone made by the Edison ore-milling Syndicate Ltd and went into details on the subject and after some discussion it was unanimously

Resolved (1) that a license be given to the Edison Ore-Milling Syndicate, Ltd, to make trials for rock on the proprietors large Allotment on Whitbarrow No 666a on the Heversham Award for a period of two years, from today, subject to the tenancies of Mr G Moss and Mr T A Argles mentioned below
(2) that (subject to the Proprietors being sufficiently empowered by Order of the Charity Commissioners or of the Local Government Board or otherwise and to the consent of the Lords of the Manor, whose consent has already been given informally, being obtained, should such consent be necessary) the Syndicate have an option to be declared during the said period of two years to take a leases of the right to Quarry and take rock and limestone on the said Allotment for the term of twenty one years at the yearly dead rent of £20 to merge in royalty and at royalties of 2d per ton for the first 21,000 tons, 1 and 1/2d per ton for the next 30,000 tons above the first 20,000 and 1d per ton for any quantity above 50, 000 raised during each year, accounts to be taken half yearly, the lessees paying all rates, and taxes (except property tax) and legal and surveyors expenses of incidental to the licence to search and to the Lease, the Lease to be subject to (a) to the right of the Proprietors under the Heversham Inclosure Act and Award to get Limestone and other materials on the said Allotment for building and burning into lime and other purposes and repairs of the public and private roads of the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth (b) the tenancy of Mr George Moss for quarrying and taking stone on the Allotment and (c) to Mr T A Argles' tenancy of the eatage and shooting of the said allotment, the lease to contain provisions and covenants usual in Leases of Quarries in this District and a covenant binding the Lessees to make and maintain a sufficient fence round the Quarries and workings and to begin and effectually prosecute the work of quarrying stone under the provisions of the Lease from the commencement of the term and during the continuance.
(3) that in the event of the Lessees making a Railway or Tramway for the purpose of their working all residents in the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth and Witherslack and District have the right to send and receive goods on such railway or tramway at rates to be agreed upon. (4) that a Committee consisting of Messrs T A Argles, Arthur Hoggarth, John Burrow, R F Matthews and George Pearson be appointed to negotiate terms with the Syndicate and to advise the Landowners thereon generally and (5) that Mr Milne, Solicitor of Kendal, be asked to act for the Proprietors in the matters above mentioned.

The Minutes of the last Meeting were read and confirmed.

The chairman reported that the negotiations with the Edison Ore Milling Syndicate had entirely broken down and that the matter was considered at an end.

The various terms were renewed the exception that the Proprietors agreed that Mr William Farrer should take on his father's interests at Whitescar End Allotment and Shilloe Quarry to the end of the seven years.
The minutes were examined and it was resolved that Mr Burrow and the Chairman be a Committee to close the accounts for the year, as soon after the new year as possible.

Mr Burrow was instructed to pay the Assistant overseer in aid of the Rates £80 now and £60 next March.
It was resolved not to thin the Plantation this year.

The minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed. The various leases were renewed to the same tenants for the ensuing year. The accounts were examined showing a balance of £64. 13. 2. It was decided not to cut down any more trees at present. It was resolved to pay Mr Les Martindale £100 for relief of poor rate in two half yearly payments of £50 each.

I am requested to give you Notice that a Public Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth, will be held at the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite aforesaid on Friday the 22nd Day of November 1907 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon for the following purposes.

5th The Proprietors reserve all the Limestone Rock with liberty≥.; to get and Quarry stone and Material for Building and other purposes either for themselves or tenants in the several Quarries and to cart and carry away the same without being subject to any damages for so doing from off the Allotment No 666a and Let the right to Quarry for sale to Mr R Strickland viz for £4 per annum for 3 years and £5 for 4 years.
For each Powder Runner or Bed Plate delivered to any person requiring the same and which shall be used within the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth, the tenant or person getting them shall pay the Proprietors the sum of Three Guineas in addition to the yearly Rent and for any Powder Runner or Bed Plate required as above by any person who may wish to get, dress and Quarry the same, the tenant shall not charge more than one Pound in addition to the Three Guineas increased Rent.
At the end of the term, the tenant shall be allowed one month to remove out of the Allotment and also out of the several Quarries situated therein, all Quoins, Lintels, Flags and Gate Posts or other stone intended to be sold or delivered to any person requiring the same and which shall not be used within the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth, and for every Ton of stone removed for sale out of the Township of Crosthwaite with Lyth, after the expiration of the time given the tenant shall pay to the Proprietors the sum of one pound in addition to the yearly Rent. The Quarry to be left, tidy, at the end of the term.
6 The Proprietors reserve all the Larch Trees and Coppice Wood growing upon the same Allotment with liberty to cut down, manufacture and cart away the said wood at any time from off the Allotment No 666a
7 The Proprietors reserve all Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl which may be produced thereon with full liberty to hunt and shoot over all the aforesaid Allotment No 666a and Let the same to Mr T A Argles for £16.
8 The tenants to pay all the Taxes and all the parochial rates and assessments which may be imposed upon the same. The Tenant of the Cottage House, Garden from the 25th Day of April and the House on the 12th Day of May 1914.. The Tenant of the Quarries to enter on from the Day of Letting, the 17th December 1907.
The Taker of Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl from the 25th Day of April 1908 and at the end or any sooner determination of the term to give up possession to their incoming tenants on the said dates.
The Rent to be due on the first Day of June in each year if demanded and paid to Mr John Burrow, the Agent, for the time being, of the Proprietors.
Resolved that the Eatage and Depasturage with all Game, Hares, Rabbits and Wildfowl that may be produced thereon of the Township Allotment of Crosthwaite with Lyth, Situated at Whitescar End and the Shilloe Quarry, and No. on the Award Plan 649a containing about 29 acres, more or less to be Let for one year and renewed yearly until the expiration of seven years subject to and in accordance with the following conditions and reservations and Let to W Farrer (for £4.10.0. and £1.1.0. for the Eatage.)
The Proprietors reserve all Trees and Coppice Wood growing thereon with all the surplus Rock, Limestone and Shilloe, with liberty to get stones for the Roads, Material, sand and shilloe and cart and carry away the same at any time without being subject to any damages for so doing from off the Allotment No. 649a.
The tenant to enter on for Eatage and Depasturage with all Game, Rabbits and shilloe from the 25th Day of April 1908 and at the end or sooner determination of the term to give up possession to the Proprietors or their incoming tenants on the same date.
Resolved that a Committee consisting of Rev T Heelis, Mr John Burrow, Mr Fulton and Mr James Martindale be requested to meet Mr William Farrer and go into the question of the extent of the parish boundary at Whitescar End.
Resolved that the same Committee be requested to deal with the water supply at Whitbarrow Cottage.

At a Meeting of Proprietors held held at the Vestry Room pursuant of a matter due from a Notice, there were present, Mr T A Argles, in the Chair, Rev T Heelis, Mr John Burrow, Mr Abbott, Joseph Simpson, J J Burrow, E A Fulton, John Ellis, Thomas Pearson, Richard Dewhurst, Robert Metcalfe, Henry Martin.
The Minutes of the last Meeting were read and confirmed.
The Proprietors resolved that Mr Dewhurst be allowed to give up the Quarries as from the present date.
Resolved that Advertisements be put in the Westmoreland Gazette and Kendal News on Saturdays Nov 30th and Dec 6th inviting tenants for the letting of the Eatage and stating rights on Township Allotment, the Cottage, Nuts and Quarries, etc, etc. tenders to be sent to Mr John Burrow by Dec 12th. The inspection of the Nuts was deferred to an adjourned meeting.
The Meeting was adjourned to Dec 17th at 2 o'clock.

A Special Meeting of owners and occupiers for Crosthwaite and Lyth was held at the Bridge at Durham Bridge and afterwards at Durham Bridge Farm on April 20th at 3 pm
There were present:- Mr T A Argles, in the Chair, Canon Argles, Mr T Heelis, Mr John Burrow, Miss A Garnett, Mr J Gibson, Mr Abbott, Mr Strickland and many others.

A scheme was submitted to the Meeting from the District Council for the improvements to the Bridge and for improving the gradient at Foldham Hill, including new Bridge Building. Mr Heelis proposed that the Plan preferred of the District Council be approved and occupiers agree to fund half of the cost up to £110. Canon Argles proposed and Mr Heelis seconded an Amendment to the effect that the Meeting approved a modified scheme, leaving the Bridge but easing the two curves at the west of the Bridge and to the north. This amendment was carried by a large majority.
Resolved that the District Council be requested to approve of the above modified scheme and asked if would kindly meet the Parish with half the cost.

At a Public Vestry Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth, held in the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite on Monday the 23rd Day of November 1908 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon pursuant to a Notice of which the following is a copy.
Notice is hereby given that a Public Vestry Meeting of the Proprietors of Messuages, Lands and Hereditaments within the Township of Crosthwaite and Lyth, will be held in the Vestry Room in Crosthwaite on Monday the 23rd day of November 1908 at 2.30 in the afternoon for the purpose of letting or renewing the several Leases of Whitbarrow Township Allotment, viz, the Eatage, Game, Quarries, Cottage House and Nuts, for one year and other matters relating thereto, and to consider the desirability of cutting some Larch trees growing upon the Township Allotment.

A Special Meeting of owners and occupiers in the Parish of Crosthwaite and Lyth was held at the Vestry Room on Friday the 13th November 1908 at 2.30 pm to consider an amended proposal to alter the Bridge at Durham Bridge and improve the dangerous turns near there. The Rev T Heelis presided and explained that the proposed alterations included the widening of the Bridge at the south side instead of rebuilding the bridge as in the first scheme - the estimated cost being £140 of which the half would have to be contributed locally.

Mr Abbott proposed Miss A Garnett seconded that the modified scheme being the bridge that it is and easing the two curves adhered to. Mr Ellis proposed and Mr T North seconded an amendment approving the larger scheme and that larch trees to the amount of £70 be cut in the Township Plantation. The amendment was carried by six votes to five.

The Annual Meeting of Landowners was held in the Vestry Room on Monday 23rd November at 2.30pm, the Rev T Heelis in the Chair. The minutes of the Meeting of 13th November were read and confirmed. The Chairman reported that the scheme for road improvement at Durham Bridge had been approved by the District Council, and, subject to the consent of owners of adjoining property being obtained, would now go forward.
The Chairman was instructed to write to Miss Agnes Garnett asking for her consent to an exchange of land.
The Accounts of the Landowners were presented and found correct, an item of 10/- Game Rent from T A Argles being carried forward to next year's a/c.
The several leases were renewed in every case.
A Committee consisting of Messrs J Burrow, E A Fulton, Jas Martindale and Rev T Heelis was appointed to mark trees for sale on the Township Plantation.
£40 was voted for relief of rates during the ensuing year.

The Annual Meeting of the Landowners of Crosthwaite and Lyth was held in the Vestry Room on Monday 22nd Day of November 1909 to consider the cutting of some Larch Trees on Whitbarrow, and renewing the several Leases of the Whitbarrow Property and decide the letting of the Stone Quarries.
Present Mr T A Argles, in the Chair, Messrs E W Wakefield, T Heelis, W Abbott, S Walker, J Burrow, H Thornton, J Wilson, T Pearson, T Longhorn, J Martindale, W Strickland.
Resolved that the accounts be passed and Mr Argles was requested to make enquiry as to getting the Income Tax for the last three years.
Resolved that the sum of £50 be paid to the Overseers Accounts.
Resolved that the several Leases of Whitbarrow Property be renewed except the Stone Quarries.
Resolved that Mr Wm Strickland's tender for Stone Quarries of £50 per annum for 5 years be accepted.
Resolved that Mr Heelis and Mr Martindale be instructed to draw up reasonable conditions for the letting of the Stone Quarries.
Resolved that Larch Trees be cut on Whitbarrow for the Durham Bridge road improvement but not to exceed the amount of £100-
Resolved that Messrs T Heelis, J Burrow, E A Fulton, J Martindale be appointed a committee to mark the trees.
Resolved that the above committee be appointed to meet Mr Pearson to view the fence on Whitbarrow adjoining Howridding Wood. Mr Burrow reported that the occupier of the Township Allotment wanted a larger sheep fold for penning sheep.

Resolved that Mr Henry Barker's Tender for Larch wood be accepted, namely 10/4d per foot for the Larch over 5” quarter girth, and for all under 5”, 21/- per 100 yards less Two and a half percent discount.
Resolved that payment be made by the 14th July 1910 and all wood to be cleared out by the end of March.
Resolved that tenders be invited for putting up about 80yds of wall for Sheep Fold on Township Allotment.
